Brenda Pamperin, a firefighter at the McLean fire station, and Lynn Salvo, a local resident, have been invited to join RideToAwareness.org, a 501(c)(3) charity organization created to raise awareness and funds for mental illness. One in four Americans is affected by mental illness and the huge stigma associated with it prevents many from getting help. They are doing a 3,000-mile bicycle ride over 60 days across the country from San Diego, CA to St. Augustine, FL from Sept. 14, 2015 – November 14, 2015 to bring attention to this issue.

They will be crossing 8 southern states and stopping in 10 cities to host media events to raise awareness and funds for the local chapters of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and Mental Health America over the two months. They are:  San Diego, Phoenix, El Paso, Austin, Baton Rouge, Mobile, Pensacola, Tallahassee, Gainesville, St. Augustine.ated to raise awareness and funds for mental illness.

Both riders plan to blog their experience and use social media to share photos and articles. It is their hope to inspire others to learn more about this issue and to be an advocate for change. Donations can be made by going to the Ride To Awareness website.
